Confusing two "dummies"

Back in 2003 I was in basic training for the Army. In my platoon we had some, not so bright individuals. One morning one of these soldiers had to go on sick call and was not around for weapons draw. This day was training on drill and ceremony and upon this soldiers return he was given a dummy rifle to practice with.
Everything had been going as normal with the drill sergeant giving commands and us...
USAF E5 gains entrance to an active duty nuclear submarine.

In the mid 1980’s I was an E5 in the USAF stationed at Hickam AFB in Hawaii.
At the time I was taking a college class at Submarine Base Pearl Harbor. Class ended at 2200hrs (8:00 pm).
One evening when I exited the building after class there was a submarine docked directly across the street.
Being the curious individual that I was and being someone who’s knowledge of waterborne vessels was limited...

We did a lot of our pre-Germany training at Shilo in 1974. Someone else was there at the same time, namely German armoured units zipping hither and yon in their Leopard tanks.
One of our guys spoke fluent German. He made a few friends amongst the Germans. One of them [VW] extended an invitation, "when you come over, if you're ever near [Kaserne], come visit."
And so we did.
We had some culture...
How the Navy helped me craft a good life in spite of my lack of intelligence.

The post "As a legally retarded person, I was able to finish college thanks to the military" prompted me to write down what happened to me.
I was a C,D, and F high school student, 3rd chair trumpet, no sports. No surprise there to me since I became aware of my lack of intelligence in the 3rd grade. However I wanted to serve on a submarine so I enlisted in the Navy right after high school, this was...

I just found out I was diagnosed legally retarded as a child. I went Air Force and served honorably and even got my degree in the process.
I never saw the documents stating I am retarded, but my uncle told me recently that my parents got the diagnosis from the doctor examining me at the age of 5 and putting me through a bunch of tests (which I do sort of remember) but they ignored it "because...
Told to come to Drill despite having pink eye. Sgt Moron later regrets that.

National Guard. I got Pink Eye once the day before Drill weekend. Called my Sgt. and was told I still had to come to first formation. I told him that's a bad idea because it's Very contagious and I could spread it to the whole company and that I'd be happy to make up the Drill when it clears up. He says, "I don't care. You're not a doctor. It's probably nothing. Your ass Better be here in the...

My great Uncle (we'll call him Jonas) was in the German Army in WW2. Towards the war's end, the allies were advancing, and his unit was tasked with defending a junction.
My Uncle's unit had taken significant losses, and they were pretty undermanned by the time they got to the junction. Moreover, their equipment was limited; they had a Pak 40, their primary anti-tank gun.
He had just woken up a...

I was stationed at Wheeler AFB (at that time) on Oahu in the 1980s.
The base commander (O5. It was a very small base) got pulled over by Honolulu PD for DUI while driving a staff car in Waikiki. Needless to say he lost his position.
Shortly afterward, his replacement was announced.

During my time in the Marine Corps, I completed a total of 4 tours in Iraq. During my second tour, we took over an Air Base from the 82nd Airborne in the AL Anbar provience. The transition period was quite fun. We were in tents that were no where near the head (Bathroom for you civilian folks.) We were also instructed to hydrate like our life depended on it. Like a good LCpl (Lance Corporal) I,...

You Want Me to Account for ALL of the Property?
In 2014 I was deployed to a base “somewhere in the Middle East.” I was an intelligence officer, however, the needs of the Army said, “You’re going to head up the Logistics section.” I really had no clue what I was doing, thankfully my NCO (non-commissioned officer) was a subject matter expert in this area.
During this time, I ended up being named...
