My Dad was in the Army and I was in the Air Force, so you’ll have to forgive me if I don’t use correct Army lingo or ranks. My Dad retired as a full bird and this is his story as he told it to me. He might have been a Lt or Captain at the time. Probably some time in the late 70s-early 80s.
Dad’s group was out on a training exercise and one of the rules was you couldn’t leave any trash anywhere....

This might not be as dramatic as many other stories on here, but it should crack some of you up. First, I'm on mobile. Sorry if my formatting is not on par. Second, english isn't my first.
Back in the 90s I had to do my mandatory time in the army. Since not too many of us were after a career morale wasn't too high, and a lot of us put way more effort into pranks and shenanigans. Especially the...
Year of the Snake - Part 1 Viper --- RePOST

It's Memorial Day again. Time to remember those who pulled us through but didn't make it back themselves. This story features a man who died prematurely, but not before he saved my life. Seems right to tell how those lost soldiers lived and mattered on this Day, rather than lament how they died.
It's complicated. This story has three parts, all about snakes - which are linked to at the bottom. But...

I did my mandatory military service in the Finnish army. I was graduating the NCO school as an artillery forward observer under sergeant. We were all interviewed by the professional officers who trained us on which posting each of us wanted. I had the best grades so I had the first pick.
I chose to stay in the same unit where the NCO training had been held. I took the opportunity to ask a...

I went over to help Dad with something this morning, and we got to shooting the shit. I relayed to him the story recently told by /u/mynombrees about the armed robbery on post, and Dad shared this tale with me.
Setting: Summer of 1970 - Neu-Ulm, West Germany. A US Army Field Artillery unit.
NARRATOR: Buckle up folks.
I was zero years old, having just been born in March. Mom and Dad had been...
Near-death experience flying over the Pacific

There I was:
I’m tired AF with 3 hours left to Hawaii after flying a Herk over the Pacific for 12 hours. It’s pitch black outside. We’re all having a good time in the cockpit telling war stories, not knowing we were about to experience another one.
Then I see it. As Pilot-Flying, I see this object co-altitude with a bright lamp in the center that made the rest of the thing stop-light red. At...
