I know it's a flashy title but I promise you it's not nearly as exciting as that.
So when you get to Parris island or San Diego for summer camp they make you send a detailed list of what is and isn't allowed to be sent to the campers. Protein bars/powder, cough drops, vitamin C pills, etc.
My mom being the wonderful woman she is decides to go out and get the biggest damn protein powder she can...
Basic Training mail call

I went to Basic Training at Fort Jackson in the early 1990’s and I was about 27, not the oldest in our platoon but I was close.
Mail call was always a good way to end the day. Usually.
One of the guys was very thoughtful and answered his mothers question by telling her just a little something about each of us, even if it was just our name. He didn’t realize he was sentencing us all to smoking.

So there I was, on USS Boat (CV-OlderThanMe), playing sailor in the Eastern Pacific. We were working up our gumption to go on a real cruise, aka "work ups."
So my Mom sends me a care package. You need to know my Mom at the time would hoard boxes of all shapes and sizes so she would always have the right sized box for whatever she was sending to someone.
When I got the care package in the large...

The TIFU post that sparked this memory
So no shit there I was as a relatively recently promoted buck sergeant, in charge of My First SquadTM. Things are going swimmingly, my guys knew me when we were all E4s, I’m not power mad, I get to extend our lunches to 2 hours if there’s nothing going on, life’s good.
We move to a new motor pool. Spent some days organizing, ordering new equipment for our...

The terror of losing a restricted item (Singapore Basic story)

Having served my mandatory two years of service in the Singapore Armed Forces, I’ve had my fair share of scares when it comes to me or my buddies losing restricted stuff.
During Basic Military Training, my company, Kestrel Coy, was out training on urban ops. After an uncomfortable overnight stay in the field, we did some more room-clearing and then it was off to go back to the company line.
