Hi, civilian here.

I was just wondering what actual members of the military thought about mandatory service? Me and a friend were talking about it the other day and we both agreed that it seemed like a bad idea, but wanted to get some input from voluntary servicepeople.

No offence, obviously, because the work that all you guys and girls do is so absolutely heroic and brave, but to me it seems like forcing people to put themselves in danger like that is just

1. wrong, especially considering the dangers associated with military life, and that life is certainly not for everyone from what i've heard

2. would decrease the quality of the military

3. cost a TON of effort and money

4. make the military lose respect in the public eye (like what has happened in so many of the countries with mandatory service)
