Submarines, Sailors, Emails, & Hurt Feelings (a long, long story)

From late 2004 thru mid 2007, I was stationed at COMSUBFOR (Commander, Submarine Forces), previously referred to as COMSUBLANT (Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet). I worked on the Admirals Staff, as the military EKMS (Electronic Key Management System) Manager for the US Submarine Fleet. I worked with Molly, my civilian counterpart, at the NSA (Naval Support Activity) compound in Norfolk....
Oh My Darling Clementine

I originally shared this in another sub and was told to post it here!
My grandpap enlisted in WWII and was made the Morse code operater on a subchaser. Throughout his time in the Pacific theater, the Marines he encountered were right proper assholes to him and his crewmates. In response, Pap and his buddies would sing the Marines Hymn to the tune of "Oh My Darling Clementine."
I think their goal...

As all good sea stories should start, This ain't no shit!
Back in the 80's the drug war was in full swing. I was deployed to GITMO in an HU-25 Guardian. AKA the Falcon or pocket-rocket. It was a sleek business jet that was reconfigured for Coast Guard use. It was fast, it was new, had a modern avionics package, and brought the Coast Guard into the jet age. And it was just plain fun to fly.

stolen valor, an airport story

Some details will be missing as I to protect myself and some others who were involved.
I had a 2 hour plus layover in an airport down south. I am not someone who travels well anyways so I stop at a restaurant in the airport to get something to eat and to suck down a few beers to deal with the flight. I get to a bar and there is a man who is 50ish wearing a digital jungle stripe uniform with a tan...
Surprise CS party (not the fun kind of CS)

In the Finnish service, it is typical to find a looong print-out of an Excel spreadsheet tacked on a wall behind the duty officer's desk. This long combination of A4 sheets, studied and analysed by conscripts like a mythical holy text, lists a vague weekly schedule and possible dates for using accumulated leave days.
One March Monday, our MP company's resident fortune tellers (modern term is...
The MSD Series, Part Three, or How I Nearly Blew Up Port Chicago

I had only been at MSD Concord for less than a week. That was not even enough time to have my orders for explosive safety school in Yorktown, VA submitted when a civilian ship came in loaded with military ordnance. We had been on board the previous day and conducted an inch by inch inspection of all of the wire rope that was going to be used for loading and unloading explosive materials to and...

Nothing too horrible or crazy in this one; heck, I'd almost say it's downright wholesome. I even had my own special uniform at the end!
So, at one point in my illustrious US Navy career I got to show some guests around the ship. The ship was an old nuclear aircraft carrier we called the Mobile Chernobyl (4 times the reactors, 4 times the fun!), and was more than 20 years older than me at the...
The MSD Series, Part Two

Right at 08:00 morning quarters were held in the common area. By this time GM1 (E-6) Woody, Cdr. (O-5) Shortimer, LT. (0-3) Bunk, and ENS (0-1) Lou had arrived. GM1 (E-6) Woodie, was a square tube gunners mate who transferred over from the Navy at a time when the Coast Guard made an ill fated attempt to integrate Harpoon anti-ship missiles on high endurance cutters. Yet another one of Commandant...

Everyone hates working on holidays, right? Actually, young fufluns12 didn’t mind at all. I would volunteer as the duty staff member for my section because my boss would let me convert my working holidays to normal days off at a three-to-one rate, all off the books. The other advantage was that work was empty except for me and the poor guys and gals of the shift who were regularly scheduled to be...
