What happens if a non service connected injury “supersedes” a service connected one?

I’m using a hypothetical because although this is a real scenario, I’d rather not post my specifics so if the made up scenarios off, go off the gist please.
say you got some degenerative injury while in. Let’s say broken neck that was getting worse and was leading to full paralyzation. The va noted that. You started at 0% and every couple years they upgraded you. At 50% you got in a car accident and severed your lower spine. How would the va handle that? Do you just stop at 50% because they can’t say the permanent damage is from the neck or the car crash?
or Mental. Let’s say ur 40% for ptsd, then you develop worse ptsd from watching ur dog get hit by a car. After that you refuse to go out side, ptsd made you 100% home bound. How would they parse that?
