Ear pain may not be a symptom of TMJ
Posted on
I was diagnosed with TMJ while on active duty. A recurring symptom was excruciating ear pain in my left ear. The doctor at the naval hospital and the civilian ENT I saw, stated my ear pain was caused by the TMJ. When I left active duty, I was service connected with TMJ, but not “left ear pain”. I assumed it was because it’s only a symptom of TMJ.
Fast forward 10 years later to today and my oral surgeon consult at the VA. The VA oral surgeon, who specializes in TMJ issues for the university med center in town, believes my ear pain is not caused by TMJ. He stated the symptoms are more severe than just normal TMJ ear pain. I have an MRI scheduled and we’ll know more.
My question is; if he determines the ear pain is not caused by TMJ, what’s the best course of action? File a supplemental on the “left ear pain”? Or do I need to get a diagnosis first?
