Suicide Rates in Each Military Branch Compared to the US Population
Posted on
For 2018, there were 325,880 active duty airmen and in 2018, 58 active duty airmen committed suicide, down from 63 in 2017.
So 58/325,880*100,000, gives us a rate of 17.80 suicides per 100,000 airmen.
For 2018, there were 329,867 active duty seamen and in 2018, 68 active duty sailors committed suicide, up from 65 in 2017.
So 68/329,867*100,000, gives us a rate of 20.61 suicides per 100,000 seamen.
For 2018, there were 185,518 active duty Marines and in 2018, 57 Marines committed suicide, up from 46 in 2017
So 57/185,518*100,000, gives us a rate of 30.72 suicides per 100,000 Marines.
For 2018, there were 487,500 active duty soldiers and in 2018, 138 active duty soldiers committed suicide, up from 116 in 2017.
So 138/487,500*100,000, gives us a rate of 28.31 suicides per 100,000 soldiers.
In the United States in 2018, the average suicide rate per 100,000 is 13.9.
Unfortunately, when looking at age, the most comprehensive suicide data available restricts it to weird age groups. As an analyst comment, I have no concrete data on the ages of the active duty service members who committed suicide to compare this against.
For the age group of 15-24 in the United States in 2018, the suicide rate per 100,000 is 13.1.
For the age group of 25-34 in the United States in 2018, the suicide rate per 100,000 is 16.5.
For the age group of 35-44 in the United States in 2018, the suicide rate per 100,000 is 17.3.
