When I was on deployment on the 11th MEU (marines and navy would know) one of our officers decided to offer us scuba diving classes at night after work was down for the day. At the end of the three night class the guy teaching it asked if we had any questions. So I raised my hand and asked him who he was.

He looked at me dumb founded. He responded with “I’m one of only 4 field grade officers on this ship marine and I’m your chain of command, but you don’t know who I am?” Mind you we were all in boots and ut’s. So having realized I fucked up I responded with “well sir let me ask you, do you know who I am?” And when he said no of course he didn’t I said “well then that makes us even.”

I turned and left the room before he could say another word. Unfortunately by the time I got back to my birthing he had already called and informed my staff sergeant about one of his corporals not knowing my his chain of command. Totally worth it though.
