Russian Ministry of Defense confirms plans to buy 100 main battle tank based on the «Armata» Universal Combat Platform.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has signed a contract to acquire the “Uralvagonzavod” 100 new T-14 “Armata” tanks , said Russian Deputy Minister of Defence Yuri Borisov.
The Armata Universal Combat Platform consists of the T-14 main battle tank, the T-15 heavy infantry fighting vehicle and the T-16 armored recovery vehicle, among a host of other vehicles. Another member of the Armata family includes an upgunned heavy assault armored vehicle, which has been dubbed “the Tank Killer” by Russian media. The “Tank Killer” variant seems to incorporate a derivative of the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV’s 152mm artillery piece into the Armata chassis in a direct fire mounting.
The T-14 Armata (industrial designation “Object 148”) is a new Russian main battle tank based on the Armata Universal Combat Platform. It was first seen in public (initially with its turret and cannon shrouded) during rehearsals for the 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade. The Russian army plans to acquire 2,300 T-14s in the period 2015-2020.
