“We’ve been socializing the idea both over at the White House and inside the Department,” Air Force acquisition czar Will Roper said about his push for a new initiative to explore “self-flying cars.”

The military will use Silicon Valley’s approach to quickly field imperfect products, then rapidly improve them based on user feedback.

And make it snappy: The deadline is July 26th.

A Pentagon task force is reviewing over a hundred tools and services to speed up software acquisition.

The goal is to give the 6,200-strong Cyber Mission Force a common, compatible set of tools so they can act in cyberspace as a coordinated military unit.

Besides digging out ineptitude with a sharp spade, the DIB guide also offers constructive suggestions, even including 16 specific software programs to use for specific purposes, from version control to bug reports.

Will this result in more operations like the Kessel Run Experimentation Lab in Boston, where coders join airmen to build useful software? Perhaps it will mean the service will hire civilian coders or train airmen to write code.

We can expect an important announcement in a few weeks that “a significant acceleration is doable” of the Air Force’s hypersonic efforts. Roper said he’d completed a review of all the service’s work on hypersonic, one of the Pentagon’s top priorities.
