Computer and Mathematical Occupations drive aerospace, defence and security hiring activity

Computer and Mathematical Occupations, with a share of 16% new job postings, was the occupation with the greatest hiring activity in the North American aerospace, defence and security industry in Q1 2023 , ahead of Architecture and Engineering Occupations with a 16% share of new job postings.

The other prominent roles included Management Occupations with an 8% share in Q1 2023, Business and Financial Operations Occupations with a 6% share and Production Occupations with a 6% share of new job postings.

Top five companies accounted for 52% of hiring activity

Raytheon Technologies posted 15,868 jobs in Q1 2023 and registered a growth of 106% over the previous quarter, followed by Leidos with 8,317 jobs and a 212% growth. Northrop Grumman, with 5,509 jobs, and Huntington Ingalls Industries, with 2,737 jobs, recorded a 53% drop and a 30% drop, respectively, while PAE recorded a 51% decline with a 2,009 new job postings during Q1 2023.

The US held the leading share of the North American aerospace, defence and security hiring activity with a 96.45% share, a 21% decrease over Q4 2022. Canada was next with 3.05%, four-percentage-point down over the previous quarter.
