Though the war in the Pacific would rage on for several more months, the fighting in Europe officially ceased on May 8, 1945, ending six years of violent bloodshed. Though it’s difficult to imagine seven decades later, the sheer emotion of the event echoes to this day, captured in footage of the overjoyed crowds released from the inconceivable terror of total war.
