242 years! That’s how long the United States Army has been standing guard over American citizens, since before we were even an American nation.

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress officially authorized enlistment for an army made up of companies from multiple colonies. The soon-to-be states were using their own militias up until the establishment of a continental Army. June 14^th is thus when the American military was officially born.

In the days and years that followed, Congress authorized the establishment and development of branches within the Army, including Infantry, Military Police Corp, Special Forces, and most recently Cyber. The Army now stands as the largest branch of the military with its active duty soldiers and reserve components.

The Army has a rich history, touched on in the Army’s official song, that dramatically influenced our nation’s history. The Army has been protecting American citizens since the beginning. It has maintained that protection through Civil War, domestic battles, World Wars, and the war on terror. The Army has shaped the country and produced the lawmakers and even Presidents who’ve shaped our policy.

The United States and its citizens owe continued gratitude to the U.S. Army for being “first to fight for the right, and to build the Nation’s might.” Happy birthday to the United States Army!
