Sick Parent in ICU - WWYD
Posted on
Hey all. Just looking for thoughts/opinions on handling an ill parent while on Active Duty. Story time.
My father is in the ICU. He went in for an operation, developed an infection, and went downhill. I flew home for a couple days as I am pretty much it for family for him (that the relationship isn’t stressed that is). He’s being sedated and on a ventilator while they treat him, and has had a myriad of other complications. I’m hanging for a couple days, but can’t stay indefinitely. The staff has been super helpful and caring, I’m here hoping he comes out of sedation and I can keep him calm enough he doesn’t try to rip everything out of him (he’s been tough with the staff when he “awakes” but has no clue what’s going on at this point). His recovery in the hospital could be lengthy but there is also a chance he faces more hurdles and doesn’t make it out at all. How would you or have you handled this while being in the military. I have a family of my own 1000 miles away and won’t burn all my leave with no definite timeline for anything right now. I feel bad not being able to be here with him as the person he trusts most, but he also was absent much of my life too with an addiction problem. Just a tough situation to process and navigate. Any thoughts/opinions are appreciated!
