Sharing Your Location Over the Radio in 2023?
Posted on
Help a group resolve this debate: The recent conflict has seen people using Starlink, Harris, Motorola, Baofeng, and ATAK to name a few. Has the rules in 2023 on sharing your location over comms been changed? Sharing any recent military guidance in manuals/pubs on this would definitely help.
Group 1 Argument: As long as you are confident that comms are not stolen, hacked, or otherwise compromised you can share based on the needs of the mission.
Group 2 Argument: No matter how encrypted or futuristic the comms are, you never share you location, not even in emergencies.
Example: Your team gets to a specific location that wasn't predetermined on the map, so you call it in. Since you aren't near a specific predefined point, you give out the 8-10 digit grid.
Background: Got into a discussion with old school and new school people about radio security. Can't find any recent manuals on the topic. Hoping some smart comms people know the answer.
