Prior US Army Reserves Uncharacterized discharge question.
Posted on
Hello everyone. This is going to be a long one so I apologize in advance. I was in the US Army reserves from 2008-2016, 6 active, 2 inactive reserve. I served as a 42R(musician) in a unit that no longer exists(was absorbed a year or so after I was discharged). I never received my separation orders even though I had returned all my gear and signed the paper work that I had finished out my contract. I had tried all sorts of avenues to get my paperwork but everything always led to a dead end, every government agency I contacted couldn't find my records other than my enlistment. I finally found the Unit that absorbed mine and inquired. They said they were able to find my paperwork from their files. They asked for my mailing address so the could send it out etc. months go by and still nothing, I know the military doesn't work particularly fast with paperwork so I emailed the unit again and went back and forth with their 1SGT for months on where my file was. I eventually just asked for a redacted version to be emailed which he complied to and sent over. I had a rough go with my unit, they were a bunch of older soldiers close to retiring using the unit to sorta skate by to their 20year mark. I came out of basic training high speed ready to go, wanted to get signed over to a combat unit but my commander wouldn't release me due to the unit number being so low. Anyways, over the years there was a lot of conflict with me and my superiors, they were very unprofessional, and had very little military bearing. My unit rarely even conducted PT, and when it did it was only the few young ones that had to participate fully. I do not excuse my behavior, I was young (joined at 17) and angry. They were bitter and annoyed. This all led to me being told not to come to drills, never being properly signed up for required training, being told to not come to unit assignments (ceremonies, parades etc.). I obliged as these directions came down from my acting commander at the the time and/or my platoon sergeant, who really did not like me. It was a real shit show. Of course they would never admit that this is how it happened but I should have known better and still been present for rollcall I understand that now that I am older but at the time, I was pissed off and listening to the ill directed, verbal commands of my platoon sergeant and acting commander, nothing was ever in writing, so I always got marked absent for missed drills even though I was ordered not to show. Again, something I now understand was very dumb on my behalf. Anyway, in my redacted orders, there is not a lot of information at all, however it shows my discharge as Uncharacterized. I am unfamiliar with this, I know of Honorable, General, Other than honorable and Dishonorable discharges. Does anyone have any insight on what this means and/if its worth trying to request an upgrade of my discharge to anything else as no one can seem to either find my full record, or cares enough to break it out of what ever file cabinet its sitting in. I appreciate anyone who was willing to read through all of this.
