Clarification on DoD 1344.10 political activity
Posted on
Asking for some clarification and maybe some sealawyering on acceptable political activities by DoD 1344.10. I have read the reg multiple times and still want clarification, think I know the answer but just wanted to check.
Baseline info: I’m active duty, never in uniform for these purposes and would never use/bring up/give the impression of military sponsorship. However I want to participate as a volunteer in a partisan political campaign.
The issue is I’m seeing conflicting opinions/advice on what I can and can’t do. Half the people/online articles/posts say as long as you’re not in uniform/advertise being military do whatever, the other half say that’s not how it works and that per the directive, you can’t participate in anything that could solicit votes.
Are any of these acceptable?:
1) being a canvasser (aka door knocker).
2) phone banking (making phone calls from a program that doesn’t use your personal phone number. Aka complete anonymity)
3) identifying as a volunteer in general. Not a sponsor/official or holding a position, but akin to just being a baseline member of a political club.
