A news report on my Grandfather (frank) and his brother, 1943.
Posted on
They met by chance whilst boarding trains toward the front line (Burma). My grandfather had joined the army when he became old enough to follow his brother (owen, who was 10 years his senior) who had already been in the british army since 1939 and escaped Dunkirk, he was a typical 'tommy' and an extremely tough man (frank was quite the opposite being the only one of the family to go to a grammar school). They didnt see eachother again until the japanese occupation of burma fell at mandalay (another 2 years later) when they met at the commemoration and awards service (frank had been promoted higher than his old veteran brother by this point, for gallantry). They were the only two brothers left of 6 who had gone to war. Quite a cool story I uncovered whilst doing some research. Hope you guys enjoy [link] [comments] |
