This MF who was a pathological liar and terrible with money was once my friend and I let him borrow my nice suitcase to go back home from Japan. Time passes and it’s closing on him to check back in from leave. Sgt calls him and he says on the shin but he took the wrong way and has to wait to get off and catch the right direction. (You can make it maybe two stops before getting your ticket checked on the shin). It’s time to check in, he’s not checked in, surprise surprise he isn’t answering. Couple days pass by and he tells command he’s still stateside. My belief is that he bought a one way ticket, and planned to use payday money to get back. He’s broke and can’t afford a ticket. Command starts paperwork. Lose contact with him again. Eventually he contacts again days before his leave balance expires which would’ve made him officially a deserter/AWOL. Command sends him to reserve unit. I gave him $60 for a bus ride to said reserve base. Sgtmjr of the unit protects him from the fat book my command was throwing at him. Gets him checked into a new unit stateside. While part of the unit he is involved in a major aircraft mishap, gets caught smoking weed twice. first time slap on the wrist, 2nd time njp with restriction. Decides to leave with friend off base to another city while on restriction, gets caught up in a drive by shooting for whatever reason. His friend DIES! He checks his friend back in from liberty, acts like nothing happened. Tracked down by surveillance camera footage. Then and only then did they finally put him in the brig just so he could get separated shortly after.
