If only I had the confidence I have now… 4 people would be alive

In 2007-2008 I was deployed to Balad Airfield, for those who were deployed to Iraq you probably thought of it as a vacation spot from most of the other bases. The base would always get indirect fire every day, but they had the worst aim. My job at the base was to watch what they called the RAID camera which would look out 4000 feet in 4 cameras facing North, South, East and West. My job was to catch people placing IEDs or anything that look suspicious around our base. I was Army but our Captain was Airforce. I don’t know why it was like that, I was a PFC at the time and just following orders. Captain Jackson, will never forget his name, so much wanted to catch someone, and on my shift he found his vehicle that he thought placed an IED. Long story short he saw it, I didn’t, but I didn’t speak up because of rank and found out we killed a family of 4. I have 2 kids of my own right now and sometimes I can’t sleep at night because I’m alive and that family is not. If only I was more strict with my captain and told him NO! Sir I didn’t see what you saw, NO you are wrong, NO I did not have PID. I hate it everytime, around the anniversary when it happened. I hate it that he got a slap on the wrist, I hate that it was just ok.
