Ukraine will buy 50 armored personnel carrier based on a T-64 tank chassis, reported military-informant.com. The BMP-64 heavy armored personnel carrier was developed in Ukraine. This vehicle is a conversion of the T-64 main battle tank. Ukrainian Army operates several thousands of these MBTs. The T-64 was a very advanced design at it’s time and had never been exported. The BMP-64 heavy APC is designed to transport and support infantry, primarily in urban areas.
Prototype of this heavy armored personnel carrier is fitted with remotely controlled weapon station, armed with 30-mm cannon and coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun. Vehicle is also proposed with a single remotely-controlled 12.7-mm machine gun.
The BMP-64 is powered by the 5TDF multi-fuel diesel engine, developing 700 hp. It is original engine of the T-64 MBT, however it is very unreliable and has short service life. Vehicle is also proposed with Ukrainian 5TDFE diesel (850-900 hp) and 6TD diesel (1 000 hp).
