Ukraine is in the process of evaluating whether to re-start production of the Soviet 122-mm self-propelled howitzer and to start developing a new artillery system.
Before the Soviet 2S1 Gvozdika produced in Kharkov at Kharkov Tractor Plant and now in National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine is in the process of evaluating whether to re-start production 122-mm self-propelled howitzer. Kharkov Tractor Plant in the pilot project has received an order for partial modernization of self-propelled artillery system 2S1 “Gvozdika ” for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reports military-informant.com.
The first prototype was ready in 1969. The 2S1 entered service with the Soviet Army in the early 1970s and was first seen in public at a Polish Army parade in 1974. The vehicle was deployed in large numbers (72 per tank division, 36 per motorized rifle division).
If the experiment goes well it can begin to develop a new artillery system.
