The chopper landed in a muddy field off of I-10 near FM 3246 late Tuesday, There were no reports of injuries. The Apache chopper got stuck in a soggy rice field Tuesday night during a Texas Army National Guard training mission.
For the evacuation of the helicopter used Chinook.
National Guard crew members hooked the Apache up to a larger Chinook Thursday as dozens of people gathered to watch the dramatic operation.
The crowd included a former U.S. Marine helicopter mechanic who knew from experience how delicate these things can be.
“If it gets out of control during the flight, they could either lose the payload or actually lose both helicopters,” Justin Frazier said.
When the Chinook crew became concerned during the first lift attempt, they made an adjustment.
It took two tries for the Chinook to successfully lift the 11,000-plus payload out of the field.
The Apache was flown to a nearby airport for repairs.
