Russia develops new air-droppable self-propelled 120 mm mortar system

The Central Scientific – Research Institute for Precision Machine Engineering (TsNIITochMash) is developing a new 2S42 air-droppable self-propelled 120 mm mortar system to replace the aging 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled mortar system.
The model of new 2S42 air-droppable self-propelled 120 mm mortar system was unveiled during the Army-2017 international military-technical exhibition, outside Moscow.
The 2S42 «Lotos» is equipped with a highly automated turret fighting compartment with a 120-mm mortar. It is compatible with rifled rounds, specially developed for this artillery system, and any 120-mm mortar mines.
The new mortar system is based on the upgraded chassis of the BMD-4 airborne assault vehicle. It is operated by a four-man crew comprising a commander, a driver/mechanic, a gunner, and a loader.
The vehicle has a total weight of 18,000 kg. The maximum speed of more than 70 km/h and a cruising range of up to 500 km. Maximum range of fire is 13 km. Minimal firing range is 1 km firing rounds and 400 m, firing mines.
